For consumers, the monthly report was a mixed blessing as energy costs fell sharply, while food costs rose.

Joe Hannon, general manager for inventory and purchasing at Restaurant365, said consumers are adjusting to the higher prices seen at food establishments.
“Shifting economic conditions and recent policy changes have increased inflation for food items, pushing prices upward for both food at home and food away from home,” Hannon said. “In March, food away from home increased .5% and food at home increased by .4%. Rising ingredient costs and ongoing high labor expenses mean restaurants must carefully adjust menu pricing to protect profitability without losing customers.”
